Walking Moel Famau: A Local Guide to North Wales’ Beautiful Clwydian Range

by | Oct 12, 2026

There’s something rather special about having one of North Wales’ most beautiful walking destinations right on your doorstep.

Here at Trelan Farm Luxury Getaways, we’re lucky enough to be nestled in the foothills of Moel Famau, surrounded by the rolling hills and peaceful countryside of the Clwydian Range. Whether you’re a keen walker looking for a challenge or simply fancy getting outdoors and enjoying spectacular views, walking Moel Famau is one of our favourite things to recommend to guests.

What Makes Moel Famau So Special?

Standing at 554 metres, Moel Famau is the highest summit in the Clwydian Range and one of the area’s best-loved landmarks.

At the summit, you’ll find the remains of the Jubilee Tower, built to commemorate the golden jubilee of King George III. On a clear day, the panoramic views are breathtaking, stretching across the North Wales countryside towards the coast, Liverpool and beyond. It’s the kind of place that reminds you just how beautiful this little corner of Wales really is.

Can You Walk to Moel Famau from Trelan Farm?

Yes! One of the loveliest things about staying at Trelan Farm is being able to explore the surrounding countryside straight from our doorstep. Moel Famau is within walking distance of the farm, making it a wonderful adventure for guests who fancy leaving the car behind.

There are various walking routes in the area, from gentler countryside rambles to more challenging climbs, so it’s worth planning a route that suits your experience and fitness level.

There’s something particularly satisfying about returning to your cosy retreat after a day spent exploring.

Where Is the Best Place to Start a Moel Famau Walk?

One of the most popular starting points is the Bwlch Pen Barras car park, where walkers can choose between routes of varying difficulty towards the summit. The paths offer beautiful views across the surrounding hills, and the landscape changes with the seasons. Spring brings fresh greenery, summer offers long days for exploring, autumn transforms the hills into rich golden colours, and winter can be wonderfully atmospheric on a crisp, clear day. Sturdy footwear and suitable clothing are always a good idea, as conditions on the hills can change quickly.

What Else Is There to Explore Nearby?

Moel Famau is just one of the many wonderful places to discover during a stay in this part of North Wales. Nearby Loggerheads Country Park is another favourite, with woodland walks, riverside scenery and beautiful surroundings. The historic towns of Mold and Ruthin are also well worth exploring, whether you’re looking for independent shops, a lovely café or somewhere to enjoy a relaxed lunch. If you’ve worked up an appetite after your walk, our local village pub, The White Horse in Cilcain, is a lovely option for a well-earned meal.

The Perfect Way to End a Day of Walking

After a day exploring the Clwydian Range, imagine returning to your own peaceful countryside retreat, slipping into a warm outdoor soaking bath and watching the evening settle over the hills. At Trelan Farm, our four adults-only retreats are designed for exactly that kind of escape. Our three Lookouts – Leo’s, Luna’s and Lil’s – each feature a private outdoor Japanese soaking tub with air jets, while our Wonder Wagon has its own spacious outdoor soaking bath.
